Alajuela Province
Alajuela Province has a population of just under 800,000 residents and covers 6,534 square miles. Alajuela has 15 cantones and 109 districts. The 15 Canton’s that make up this remarkable province are as follows: Alajuela, San Ramón, Grecia, San Mateo, Atenas, Naranjo, Palmares, Póas, Ortina, San Carlos, Alfaro Ruíz, Valverde Vega, Upala, Los Chiles and Guatuso.
San Carlos is a horse lover’s paradise boasting rich fertile soil and year round rainfall. This canton has a deep rich Emerald Green look of Ireland 12 months of the year. Arenal, Costa Rica’s most active volcano looms in the background and can be seen from most all of San Carlos. Some of Costa Rica’s most desirable tourist attractions are within this canton. Lake Arenal is famous for its wind surfing and sits just below Arenal’s spewing smoke and fire. Exciting just doesn’t cover the Costa Rican experience! Many of the retirees living here tell us that they wish they had moved here when they were younger and not waited until retirement. Real estate prices are still reasonable in this area, good for investment, but with the baby boomers retiring, there will continue to be upward movement in property values.
